About Vida Mercer
Personally, I am a second-generation homeschooler and mother of three fierce daughters. Professionally, I am a homeschooling expert, balancing the roles of author, editor, curriculum developer, instructor, and consultant, all within the homeschooling niche. As a thought leader in non-traditional education, I am a passionate advocate for the rights and abilities of parents to educate their own children.
The Mercer Homeschooling Story
When I was six, my mom took the brave step of homeschooling me at a time when that was nearly unheard of. I began attending college at age 16, graduating summa cum laude, after which I had a 10-year career as a litigation paralegal.
To find out more about the very unexpected benefits I gained from that one decision my mom made, read my most shared and republished article of all time, or listen to some of my conversations with other rock star homeschoolers.
As an adult, many of my traditionally-schooled friends had their interest piqued by this homeschooling thing, which was then becoming more mainstream. They started coming to me for advice and resources and referring their friends to me for the same. I was thrilled to help! Nothing gave me more purpose than helping others find their confidence and success with homeschooling, and that is still true today.
I began with a simple blog to share my personal experiences and resources I love. Today, I . . .
– write about homeschooling for online and print publications,
– edit for well-known publishers of beloved homeschool resources,
– consult with anyone who wants to learn more about homeschooling, from individual families to international corporations,
– author, design, and develop homeschool curriculum, and
– teach writing to homeschoolers on behalf of one of my favorite companies, Brave Writer.
I recently completed Harvard’s Leaders of Learning course, furthering my commitment to advancing alternative education. Additionally, I proudly served on the Board of Directors of C.O.R.E. Placer Charter School to support their strong independent home study model and have been an active member of the iHomeschool Network since 2017.
My other passion project is helping women who, like me, suffer from hyperemesis gravidarum. I volunteer as a writer and compassion advocate for the HER Foundation.
